To save one life is to save the world: BRCA Awareness Panel
Mutations in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes have been found to impact a person’s chances of developing certain cancers: breast, ovarian, pancreas and melanoma -to name a few. These mutations occur at a high frequency in the Jewish community, approximately 1 in 40 Ashkenazi Jews carry a BRCA mutation linked to cancer risk. You’ll learn how a BRCA mutation and other hereditary cancer syndromes affect cancer risk in women and men, and who should undergo genetic testing and when. The speakers panel includes an oncologist, genetic counselor and patient advocates from UCSF and our community. The evening will include an opportunity to enroll in an investigational research study with free genetic testing for those who qualify. Co-sponsored by Congregation Kol Shofar, Osher Marin JCC, Brandeis Marin, Women of Rodef Sholom, and Marin Hadassah.
